Weathering with You 2019
Weathering with You is a 2019 Japanese animated romantic fantasy film written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, produced by CoMix Wave Films and distributed by Toho. This second installment in Shinkai's Disaster trilogy comes after Your Name (2016) and before Suzume (2022). The story centers on a 16-year-old high school boy, Hodaka Morishima, who leaves his difficult rural life behind to move to Tokyo. There he meets Hina Amano, an orphaned girl with the power to manipulate weather.
The voices of Kotaro Daigo and Nana Mori are featured in the film, while Atsushi Tamura handles animation direction and Masayoshi Tanaka is responsible for character design. The orchestral score and soundtrack were composed by Radwimps, who previously worked with Shinkai on Your Name (2016). A light novel version of the same name, authored by Shinkai, was released just one day before the movie premiered. Additionally, a manga adaptation appeared in Monthly Afternoon magazine on July 25, 2019.
The film opened in Japanese theaters on July 19, 2019 in standard, IMAX, and 4DX formats. It later arrived in the United States on January 17, 2020. Critics responded favorably, highlighting the animation quality, screenplay, music, visual presentation, and emotional depth. Worldwide box office earnings reached US$193.8 million, making it the top-grossing Japanese film of 2019 and the eleventh highest-grossing Japanese film ever, without inflation adjustment.
The movie earned multiple awards, including being chosen as Japan’s submission for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, though it did not receive a nomination. It also received four Annie Award nominations, including for Best Independent Animated Feature. This tied it with Spirited Away, Millennium Actress (both 2001), and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (2005) for second-most Annie nominations among anime films, behind only Ghost in the Shell (1995) and Belle (2021), which each received five.
