A 2019 British war film, 1917 was directed and produced by Sam Mendes, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. The story draws from accounts shared by Mendes’s grandfather Alfred regarding his time in World War I. Set after the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line during Operation Alberich, the film centers on two British soldiers tasked with delivering a vital message that will stop a disastrous offensive. The lead roles are portrayed by George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman. Supporting actors include Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Claire Duburcq, Colin Firth, Adrian Scarborough, and Benedict Cumberbatch.

The film's announcement occurred in June 2018, with MacKay and Chapman confirming their participation in October. The remainder of the cast joined in March of the following year. Principal photography ran from April through June 2019 across locations in the UK. Cinematographer Roger Deakins and editor Lee Smith employed extended takes to give the entire movie the illusion of one continuous shot.

1917 made its debut in the UK on 4 December 2019, followed by a theatrical release in the United States on 25 by Universal Pictures, and in the UK on 10 January 2020 through Entertainment One. It performed well both critically and commercially, earning over $446 million globally. The production received widespread recognition, including ten nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards, where it secured three wins for Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects.
