In short: you can read everything on BestMediaDB without an account or giving us any information. We do not run ads or analytics and we do not track you across other sites. This page explains the few things that are stored.
Star ratings
When you rate a title or a person, the site puts one cookie, called bmv, in your browser. It holds a random code, not your name or anything about you, and lasts two years. Its only purpose is to remember that this browser has already rated, so one browser counts once.
Our database stores your rating (the stars), the date, and two scrambled codes (hashes) made from your cookie and from your internet address (IP address) using a secret key kept on our server. The codes cannot be turned back into your cookie or your IP address. They are used only to allow one vote per browser and to stop vote-stuffing. You can delete the cookie in your browser settings at any time.
Help us improve this page, and copyright and takedown forms
If you send a report, we store what you type: your message, the page you wrote about, and your name and email address if you give them. A reply is optional for a problem report, so the email is optional there. A copyright and takedown request needs your name and email so we can reply and act on it. We also store a scrambled code (hash) of your IP address with the message to help us spot spam. Reports are kept on our server and emailed to the person who runs the site. We use them only to fix the site and to answer you, and we keep them as long as they are useful or required.
Spam protection
To limit abuse, we count how many reports and ratings come from the same scrambled IP code for a short time. These counts are not used for anything else.
Our web host
The company that hosts the site may keep standard server logs (for example IP address, the pages requested and the browser type) for security and troubleshooting. We do not use them to identify visitors.
Other websites
- Trailers play from YouTube using its privacy-enhanced address (youtube-nocookie.com). When you press play, YouTube (Google) receives your visit and handles it under its own policy.
- Affiliate links (eBay) take you to another site. eBay and similar sites use their own cookies when you click through and are governed by their own privacy policies.
Beyond those, the site does not load scripts, fonts or trackers from other companies.
Children
BestMediaDB is a general-audience site and is not aimed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your choices
You can browse without giving us anything. You can delete the bmv cookie whenever you like. If you want a report you sent removed, or have a question about your information, tell us through the Help us improve this page form and we will help. Because ratings are stored only as scrambled codes, we cannot see which rating is yours unless you still have the same browser.
Changes
If we add things like ads, analytics or accounts, we will update this page first. The date at the top shows the last update. See also our Terms of Use.
