The Two Popes 2019
The Two Popes is a 2019 biographical drama film written by Anthony McCarten and directed by Fernando Meirelles, based on McCarten's play The Pope that opened at Royal & Derngate Theatre in 2019. Set primarily in Vatican City following the Vatican leaks scandal, the story centers on Pope Benedict XVI, portrayed by Anthony Hopkins, trying to persuade Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio—later Pope Francis, played by Jonathan Pryce—to abandon his plan to resign from the archdiocese. Benedict shares his own desire to step down from papacy with Bergoglio during their conversations.
The film made its debut at the Telluride Film Festival on August 31, 2019. It had a limited release in the United States beginning November 27, 2019, followed by a UK release on November 29, and went digital on December 20 through Netflix. Critics praised the acting by Pryce and Hopkins, as well as McCarten’s screenplay. All three received nominations for their efforts at the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and British Academy Film Awards.
