Historical drama

A 2019 epic historical drama film, The King was directed by David Michôd and adapted from multiple plays within William Shakespeare's Henriad. Michôd wrote the screenplay alongside Joel Edgerton, with all parties producing the film together with Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Liz Watts. The story features Timothée Chalamet as the Prince of Wales who becomes King Henry V, joined by Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris, Lily-Rose Depp, Robert Pattinson, and Ben Mendelsohn in the ensemble cast.

It follows Henry V’s journey to the throne after his father's death, exploring his challenges with court intrigue, unresolved conflicts from his predecessor’s wars, and personal memories from his former life. The film made its debut at the 76th Venice International Film Festival on 2 September 2019, followed by a digital release through Netflix on 11 October 2019. Critics responded positively to the film overall; however, historians pointed out that it contained historical inaccuracies and departed significantly from both the source plays and documented facts.
