Biographical dramaHistorical drama

A 2019 American biographical drama film, Richard Jewell tells the story of the Centennial Olympic Park bombing that occurred during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. The movie follows security guard Richard Jewell, who discovers a bomb and alerts authorities, leading to an evacuation. Later, he becomes wrongly accused of placing the device himself. The film was directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, with screenplay written by Billy Ray. It draws from the 1997 Vanity Fair article "American Nightmare: The Ballad of Richard Jewell" by Marie Brenner and the 2019 book The Suspect: An Olympic Bombing, the FBI, the Media, and Richard Jewell, the Man Caught in the Middle by Kent Alexander and Kevin Salwen. Starring Paul Walter Hauser as Jewell, the cast also includes Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm, and Olivia Wilde.

The film had its world premiere on November 20, 2019 at AFI Fest before opening in theaters in the United States on December 13 through Warner Bros. Pictures. It earned $44 million domestically against a $45 million budget. Critics responded positively, especially praising the acting—particularly Bates, Rockwell, and Hauser—and Eastwood's direction. Some reviewers criticized the film’s depiction of reporter Kathy Scruggs, particularly how it portrayed her relationship with her sources. Richard Jewell was named one of the top ten films of the year by the National Board of Review. For her role, Bates won the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress and received nominations at both the Academy Awards and Golden Globes.
