Adventure comedyAnimatedChildren's animatedChristmas

A 2019 animated Christmas comedy film, Klaus is the directorial debut of Sergio Pablos, who also co-wrote and co-produced the project through his SPA Studios company. The film was distributed by Netflix and features traditional animation. Its voice cast includes Jason Schwartzman, J. K. Simmons, Rashida Jones, Will Sasso, Neda Margrethe Labba, Pablos (who performs a dual role), Norm Macdonald (whose final film role before his death was included in this release), and Joan Cusack. Set in a fictionalized 19th-century environment, the story centers on a postman living in a remote northern island town who becomes friends with a solitary toymaker named Klaus.

Released on 8 November 2019, Klaus garnered widespread critical praise for its animation quality, storytelling, emotional resonance, humor, and voice acting. The film earned seven awards at the 47th Annie Awards, including Best Animated Feature, and also took home the Best Animated Film award at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards. It was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards, marking the first time an animated film from Netflix received such a nomination, as well as the first animated streaming service release to be considered for the honor—alongside I Lost My Body (also from Netflix). Despite the recognition, it lost the award to Toy Story 4, which also featured Cusack.
