Supernatural horror

Impetigore is a 2019 Indonesian supernatural folk horror film written and directed by Joko Anwar. The movie features Tara Basro, Marissa Anita, Christine Hakim, Asmara Abigail, and Ario Bayu in leading roles. It tells the story of Maya (Basro), who journeys with her companion Dini (Anita) to her isolated family village in search of a legacy.

Development began in 2011, but the project was abandoned before resurfacing seven years later as an international collaboration involving Indonesian, South Korean, and American production companies. Principal photography occurred at multiple locations throughout East Java. The shoot faced difficulties due to the remote setting of the central village and Joko Anwar's hospitalization from dengue fever.

The film made its debut in Indonesia on 17 October 2019 and then screened internationally at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. It was subsequently picked up by Shudder for global streaming distribution. Impetigore performed well financially within Indonesia and earned positive feedback abroad, particularly for its cinematography, sound design, and incorporation of local folklore.

The film was submitted by Indonesia as their entry for Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards but did not receive a nomination. At the 40th Citra Awards, the nation's most prestigious film ceremony, Impetigore garnered a record 17 nods and secured 6 wins, including Best Picture, a second Best Director honor for Joko Anwar, a supporting actress trophy, and Christine Hakim's ninth Citra win overall.
