Glass 2019
Psychological thrillerSuperheroSuperhero thriller
A 2019 American superhero thriller film, Glass is written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It serves as both a crossover and sequel to Shyamalan’s earlier works Unbreakable (2000) and Split (2016), concluding the Unbreakable trilogy. Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Spencer Treat Clark, and Charlayne Woodard return in their roles from Unbreakable, while James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy reprise their Split characters. New additions to the cast include Sarah Paulson, Adam David Thompson, and Luke Kirby. The narrative centers on David Dunn / the Overseer, Kevin Wendell Crumb / the Horde, and Elijah Price / Mr. Glass, who are all captured and held in a psychiatric facility where they reflect on the reality of their superhuman abilities.
Following Disney Studios’ Touchstone Pictures declining to fund a follow-up to Unbreakable, Shyamalan developed Split with a character originally conceived for Unbreakable but removed from that script. He chose to structure this as a trilogy, using Split’s ending to connect it with the Unbreakable story arc. To secure the rights to use characters from Unbreakable, Shyamalan arranged for Disney's involvement alongside Universal Pictures. Split became both a financial and critical success, prompting Shyamalan to announce Glass production by April 2017.
Glass premiered in select Alamo Drafthouse Cinema theaters on January 12, 2019 before its U.S. release through Universal Pictures on January 18. Critics responded with mixed reviews, describing the film as "disappointing" and "underwhelming," particularly criticizing the third act, though they commended the acting performances. Many considered it the weakest entry in the trilogy. Despite this, the movie proved financially viable, earning $247 million worldwide against a $20 million production budget.
