Action-adventureAdventureSuperhero

A 2019 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics’ X-Men team is titled Dark Phoenix, known internationally as X-Men: Dark Phoenix for home release. It continues the X-Men film series as a sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse from 2016, placing it as the twelfth entry in the franchise and concluding the prequel trilogy. This production marks the first main X-Men movie without Hugh Jackman’s participation as Wolverine, and also serves as the final one produced by Bad Hat Harry Productions, although the studio was uncredited due to sexual assault accusations against Bryan Singer in 2019. The film was written and directed by Simon Kinberg and includes James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, and Jessica Chastain in its cast.

The narrative centers on the origin of Jean Grey becoming the Phoenix. Her story follows her struggle with mental health issues after a cosmic entity amplifies her psychic abilities. Throughout the film, she attempts to prevent harm from coming to those she cares about, while various groups attempt to either control or eliminate her.

Following the timeline changes introduced in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), which erased events from X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), Kinberg expressed interest in adapting Chris Claremont and John Byrne's "The Dark Phoenix Saga" for a future film. He aimed for greater fidelity than his earlier effort with The Last Stand, which received mixed reviews, even leaving Kinberg and co-writer Zak Penn dissatisfied. A sequel to Apocalypse was confirmed in 2016. Kinberg took on the role of director in June 2017, with most of the cast returning from that previous film. Principal photography started later that month in Montreal and wrapped in October 2017. The entire third act had to be re-shot in late 2018 following disappointing test screenings. The movie pays tribute to X-Men co-creator Stan Lee, who passed away in November 2018.

Released theatrically in the U.S. by 20th Century Fox on June 7, 2019, Dark Phoenix became both a critical and commercial failure. Deadline Hollywood estimated the film lost $133 million after accounting for marketing and distribution expenses, ranking it among the worst-performing movies ever made.
