A 2024 American animated science fiction film, The Wild Robot stars a service robot named Nyong'o who washes ashore on an uncharted island. There she must learn to survive, form connections with native animals, and raise an orphaned goose named Connor. This project was written and directed by Chris Sanders, adapting the 2016 novel by Peter Brown. Production was handled by DreamWorks Animation and included voice work from Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Matt Berry, Ving Rhames, Mark Hamill, and Catherine O'Hara.
DreamWorks Animation acquired the screenplay prior to the novel's 2016 publication. Sanders discovered the source material through his daughter and later accepted a directing role at DreamWorks. The animation style employs watercolor techniques, drawing inspiration from traditional Disney films and Hayao Miyazaki’s artistic vision. Kris Bowers created the musical score, marking his debut for a fully animated movie. The production spanned four years with a budget of $78million.
The Wild Robot made its debut at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2024, followed by a U.S. release on September 27 through Universal Pictures. Critics responded positively, highlighting its storytelling, animation quality, character development, soundtrack, visual design, emotional resonance, and vocal performances. The movie proved financially successful, earning $334.5million globally. It earned recognition with nine Annie Awards—winning Best Animated Feature—and took home the Critics' Choice Award and Producers Guild of America Award for Best Animated Feature. Additionally, it received four Golden Globe nominations and three Academy Award nods, becoming DreamWorks’ most honored film at the latter event. A follow-up based on Brown's second novel, The Wild Robot Escapes, is currently in development.
