A Complete Unknown is a 2024 American biographical film focusing on the early days of Bob Dylan’s career. The movie was directed by James Mangold and written by Mangold and Jay Cocks. It draws inspiration from the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald. The story covers the years 1961 to 1965, starting with Dylan's emergence as a folk singer and ending with his electrifying performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. In the film, Dylan is played by Timothée Chalamet, who also served as producer. Supporting cast members include Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Boyd Holbrook, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz, Eriko Hatsune, Big Bill Morganfield, Will Harrison, and Scoot McNairy.
The film made its debut at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on December 10, 2024 and was later released in the United States by Searchlight Pictures on December 25. It earned $140.5 million worldwide. Critics responded positively, and the film was named one of the top ten films of 2024 by both the American Film Institute and the National Board of Review. The National Board of Review honored Fanning with the Best Supporting Actress award.
The movie received eight nominations at the 97th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Chalamet), Best Supporting Actor (Norton), and Best Supporting Actress (Barbaro). It was also nominated for three awards at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama.
