War drama

A 2024 American war drama film, The Six Triple Eight tells the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-black, all-female unit during World War II. Written and directed by Tyler Perry, it is adapted from the article "Fighting a Two-Front War" by Kevin M. Hymel. The movie stars Kerry Washington, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga, Gregg Sulkin, Susan Sarandon, Dean Norris, Sam Waterston, Kylie Jefferson, Moriah Brown, and Oprah Winfrey.

It had a limited release in theaters on December 6, 2024 before premiering on Netflix on December 20. Critics gave the film mixed reviews. Military historian Dick Cole questioned its historical accuracy, pointing out that it misrepresented trench warfare in Italy and portrayed racial segregation inaccurately. He argued that the exaggerated depiction of racist characters weakened the narrative about discrimination experienced by the 6888th. The song "The Journey" was nominated for Best Original Song at the 97th Academy Awards. The film earned five nominations and wins at the 56th NAACP Image Awards, including Outstanding Motion Picture and acting honors for Washington, Obsidian, and the ensemble cast.
