Mean Girls 2024
Musical comedyTeen comedyTeen musical
A 2024 American musical teen comedy film, Mean Girls is the third entry in the franchise and adapts the stage musical of the same name, which was derived from the 2004 movie also written by Fey, itself inspired by Rosalind Wiseman's 2002 book Queen Bees and Wannabes. The film was directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., with screenplay by Tina Fey. Starring Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Aulii Cravalho, and Christopher Briney, Fey and Tim Meadows return to their original roles.
Paramount Pictures revealed the project in January 2020, with Fey writing the script again and producing alongside Lorne Michaels, who had produced the 2004 version. Composer Jeff Richmond and lyricist Nell Benjamin reworked material from the stage musical, while Richmond also composed the film's score. Principal photography occurred in New Jersey from March through April 2023, with casting starting in December 2022. Originally planned for Paramount+, Paramount Pictures chose a theatrical release after favorable test screenings.
The film debuted at AMC Lincoln Square in New York City on January 8, 2024 and was distributed in the U.S. by Paramount Pictures on January 12. It earned over $105 million globally on a $36 million budget and garnered mixed reviews.
