Biographical dramaPoliticalPolitical drama
Unplanned is a 2019 American drama film written and directed by Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman. The movie adapts the controversial 2011 memoir Unplanned by anti-abortion activist Abby Johnson. Ashley Bratcher portrays Johnson, depicting her journey from working as a clinic director for Planned Parenthood to becoming an anti-abortion advocate.
The film premiered in US cinemas through evangelical Christian distributor Pure Flix on March 29, 2019. Originally titled Redeemed, the project's content was hidden from the public to reduce opposition from abortion rights groups. My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell acted as executive producer and made a cameo appearance. Certain television networks declined to broadcast promotional materials because of the film’s sensitive topic.
Worldwide earnings reached $21 million despite a $6 million budget. Medical professionals and Planned Parenthood supporters strongly criticized the film's depiction of abortion issues and Planned Parenthood itself, calling it political propaganda.
