The Souvenir 2019
Coming-of-age dramaIndependentRomantic drama
A 2019 romantic drama film, The Souvenir was written, directed, and co-produced by Joanna Hogg. It draws from Hogg’s time at film school, presenting a semi-autobiographical narrative. The story centers on a young, aspiring film student who enters her first genuine romance with an alluring and enigmatic man. Starring Honor Swinton Byrne, Tom Burke, and Tilda Swinton, the film follows this relationship closely.
The Souvenir premiered internationally at the Sundance Film Festival on 27 January 2019, where Hogg received the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic. It opened in the United States on 17 May 2019 through A24, and in the United Kingdom and Ireland on 30 August 2019 via Curzon. Worldwide box office receipts exceeded $2 million. Critics responded positively, with the film recognized as one of the top 10 independent films of 2019 by the National Board of Review.
It was nominated for Best International Film at the 35th Independent Spirit Awards and received eight total nods, including Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor (Burke), and Most Promising Newcomer (Swinton Byrne) at the 22nd British Independent Film Awards. A follow-up, The Souvenir Part II, appeared in 2021.
