A 2019 supernatural horror film, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was directed by André Øvredal and adapted from the children's book series by Alvin Schwartz. The screenplay was written by the Hageman Brothers, based on a screen story by Guillermo del Toro, who also produced the film along with Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. This international production involved the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and features an ensemble cast including Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Gabriel Rush, Austin Zajur, Natalie Ganzhorn, Austin Abrams, Dean Norris, Gil Bellows, and Lorraine Toussaint.

In 2013, CBS Films purchased the rights to the book series from 1212 Entertainment with plans to turn it into a movie. By January 2016, del Toro was involved in developing and potentially directing the project for CBS Films. Later, Øvredal took on the directing role, while del Toro, Daniel, Brown, and Grave served as producers. Principal photography commenced on August 27, 2018 and concluded on November 1, 2018 in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada.

The film had its theatrical premiere in the United States on August 9, 2019 through Lionsgate Films. Critics responded positively, especially for how it portrayed the horror elements from the original source material. It earned $105 million at the box office, marking a financial success. A sequel is currently in development.
