Polaroid 2019
Supernatural horrorTeenTeen horror
A 2019 American supernatural horror film, Polaroid was directed by Lars Klevberg and adapted from his own 2015 short film with the same title. The story centers on high school student Bird Fitcher, who receives a classic Polaroid camera that conceals sinister secrets. She discovers that anyone photographed by it meets a tragic end. The movie features Kathryn Prescott, Samantha Logan, Tyler Young, and Javier Botet in key roles.
Dimension Films first revealed the project in 2015, with Klevberg appointed as director and Blair Butler responsible for writing the screenplay. Principal filming commenced in Halifax, Nova Scotia on March 9, 2017 and concluded by May 2017. Originally scheduled for release in August 2017, the film faced multiple delays. By October 2018, Lantern Entertainment had acquired The Weinstein Company/Dimension’s assets through bankruptcy proceedings, partnering with 13 Films for international distribution. This marked the final production from Dimension Films, which declared bankruptcy in 2017 after Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual misconduct, a scandal that unfolded two years before this film's release.
In Germany, Polaroid premiered theatrically on January 10, 2019 under Wild Bunch, followed by a UK release on June 1, 2019. It was made available in the United States on September 17, 2019 via VOD and on October 11, 2019 in select theaters through Vertical Entertainment, later becoming accessible on Netflix. Critics largely dismissed the film, faulting its excessive use of jump scares and weak storyline.
