Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 2019
Black comedyComedy-dramaSatirical
A 2019 comedy-drama film, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, who also produced it alongside David Heyman and Shannon McIntosh. The production was handled by Columbia Pictures in collaboration with Bona Film Group, Heyday Films, and Visiona Romantica, and Sony Pictures Releasing was responsible for distribution. This co-production involved the United States, United Kingdom, and China. The main cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio as Rick Dalton, an aging Western actor; Brad Pitt as his stunt double Cliff Booth; and Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate, Roman Polanski’s wife. The story takes place in 1969 Los Angeles and follows a fading actor (DiCaprio) and his stunt double (Pitt) through the evolving film industry, while the looming threat of the Tate murders hangs over the narrative.
The project was announced in July 2017 and marked Tarantino’s first film without Bob and Harvey Weinstein as producers. The partnership ended after allegations of sexual abuse against Harvey Weinstein were made public. After a competitive bidding process, Sony Pictures Releasing agreed to distribute the film and honored Tarantino’s request for final cut rights. Additional actors such as Pitt, DiCaprio, Robbie, Zoë Bell, Kurt Russell, and others joined the cast between January and June 2018. Principal filming took place from June through November in the Los Angeles area.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was the last film to feature Luke Perry, who passed away on March 4, 2019; it is dedicated to his memory. The movie made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2019 and was screened as a 35 mm film print. It opened in theaters in the United States on July 26 and in the United Kingdom on August 14. Worldwide earnings exceeded $409 million, and while critics praised the film, it also faced criticism for historical inaccuracies and depictions of certain artists. The National Board of Review and the American Film Institute listed it among the Top-10 films of 2019, and it won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
The film received 10 nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards, including a nomination for Best Picture, and took home two awards—Best Supporting Actor for Pitt and Best Production Design. It also garnered various other honors. The film has since been considered one of the greatest works of the 2010s and 21st centuries. According to the Writers Guild of America, its screenplay ranks as the 22nd-greatest of the 21st century. Tarantino has said that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is his personal favorite among all the films he has directed.
A novelization written by Tarantino, marking his first attempt at authoring a book, was published in 2021. A follow-up to the movie titled The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, co-written by Tarantino and directed by David Fincher, is currently in production with Brad Pitt in the lead role, and it is scheduled for release in 2026.
