Hellboy is a 2019 superhero film based on the Dark Horse Comics character. It serves as a reboot of the Hellboy film series and marks the third live-action installment in the franchise. The movie was directed by Neil Marshall and stars David Harbour as the main character, with Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, Daniel Dae Kim, and Thomas Haden Church appearing in supporting roles. Its story draws from comic book series including Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt, The Storm and the Fury, and Hellboy in Mexico. In the plot, Hellboy faces internal conflict while attempting to stop a revived sorceress from taking over the world.

The project initially began as a sequel to Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), with Andrew Cosby serving as screenwriter and Mignola contributing to the script. However, Guillermo del Toro was not offered the writer-director position he had held in prior films, and Ron Perlman declined to reprise his role without del Toro’s involvement. The production was then restructured into an R-rated reboot after September 2017 was hired as director and April 9, 2019 cast as Hellboy. Principal filming commenced in April 12 in the United Kingdom and Bulgaria, concluding in December.

The film premiered in New York City on Lionsgate, and its U.S. release followed on $55.1 million, distributed by $50 million. Critics responded negatively, criticizing the storyline, tonal inconsistency, and excessive violence, while also unfavorably comparing it to earlier del Toro-directed entries. Nevertheless, the movie received praise for its makeup work and ’s performance. At the box office, it underperformed, earning against a production cost.

A second reboot titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man was released in 2024.
