SupernaturalSupernatural horror

A 2019 American supernatural horror film, Doctor Sleep follows the story of Dan Torrance, played by Ewan McGregor, a man haunted by his past at the Overlook Hotel and suffering from alcoholism. The movie is based on Stephen King's 2013 novel and continues the narrative from The Shining (1980). Dan teams up with two new characters, Abra Stone and Billy Freeman, portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson, Kyliegh Curran, and Cliff Curtis, to fight against Rose the Hat and her cult.

Warner Bros. Pictures started working on the film adaptation soon after the novel’s release in 2013. Akiva Goldsman initially wrote a script, but it wasn’t until the success of It in 2017 that funding became available. Mike Flanagan was then brought in to rewrite the screenplay and direct the project. Flanagan aimed to bridge gaps between the novel and earlier film versions of The Shining. Principal photography took place in September 2018, primarily in Georgia, including Atlanta, wrapping up in December.

The film had its world premiere at the Regency Village Theater in Los Angeles on October 21, 2019 and opened theatrically worldwide on October 31, 2019, with a U.S. release on November 8. Critics responded positively to Flanagan’s direction and the script, as well as the acting—particularly from McGregor, Ferguson, and Curran—but noted issues with pacing and length. Despite earning $72.4 million globally, it underperformed at the box office when compared to other Stephen King adaptations like It Chapter Two and Pet Sematary released in 2019.
