Drama

A 2019 American medical drama film, Breakthrough was directed by Roxann Dawson in her first feature film role. The screenplay was written by Grant Nieporte, adapting The Impossible, a Christian book by Joyce Smith and Ginger Kolbaba. Starring Chrissy Metz, Josh Lucas, Topher Grace, Mike Colter, Marcel Ruiz, and Dennis Haysbert, with Stephen Curry and Samuel Rodriguez as executive producers, the story follows a Lake St. Louis teenager who fell through ice on January 19, 2015 and stayed submerged for 15 minutes before rescue efforts began. Despite being saved, the boy remained in a coma, requiring his family to draw strength from faith during the crisis.

Breakthrough made its debut in St. Louis on March 20, 2019, then opened in the United States on April 17, 2019 through 20th Century Fox. This marked the studio’s initial feature film following Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox. Critics gave the movie mixed reviews, noting strong acting and uplifting themes but calling the storyline predictable. The film earned a nomination at the 92nd Academy Awards for Best Original Song.
