A 2019 psychological science fiction film, Ad Astra (Latin for "To the stars") was directed by James Gray and co-written by Ethan Gross. The movie stars Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, and Donald Sutherland. It tells the story of an astronaut traveling into space to find his missing father, whose dangerous pursuit of alien life endangers the entire Solar System and Earth's existence.

The film project debuted in early 2016. Gray expressed his goal to show "the most realistic portrayal of space travel ever seen on screen." Brad Pitt joined the cast in August 2016, followed by the rest of the ensemble, except Tyler, who was added in 2017. Principal photography started in Los Angeles around August and concluded in October. Tyler entered the cast in 2018 after test screenings revealed that a romantic subplot was needed for Brad Pitt's role.

Ad Astra had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 29, 2019. It opened in U.S. theaters on September 20 by 20th Century Fox. Critics appreciated the film overall, especially Brad Pitt's acting, though it failed to earn strong box office returns, making $135.2million against its budget. The film earned a nomination at the 92nd Academy Awards for Best Sound Mixing.
