Abominable is a 2019 animated fantasy adventure film directed and written by Jill Culton. This co-production between China and the United States was led by DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio, and features voices from Chloe Bennet, Albert Tsai, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Eddie Izzard, Sarah Paulson, and Tsai Chin. The story centers on a young woman named Yi (Bennet), who finds Everest, a young Yeti, on the rooftop of her Shanghai apartment building. She then journeys to Mount Everest to help him reconnect with his family.
The project was first announced in 2010 under the original title Everest. By 2016, Culton stepped away from the film, replaced by Todd Wilderman and Tim Johnson, but later returned in February 2018 to replace Johnson, who stayed on as executive producer. Wilderman continued as co-director. DreamWorks revealed in December 2016 that the film would be released in September 2019, with Pearl Studio and Zhong Ming You Ying Film handling co-production. The casting announcement occurred between March and June 2018. In May 2018, DreamWorks changed the title to Abominable, and the soundtrack was composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams.
The film made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2019 and was released in the United States by Universal Pictures on September 27, while Pearl Studio handled distribution in China. Critics responded positively to its visual presentation, and it earned over $190 million worldwide against a production budget of $75 million.
In Southeast Asia, the film sparked controversy due to a map showing the nine-dash line, a disputed boundary used by China to assert claims in the South China Sea. As a result, Abominable has been banned in several nations involved in territorial disputes with China over the region—namely the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
A sequel television series titled Abominable and the Invisible City premiered on Peacock and Hulu from October 2022 to March 2023.
