Mario Kart World 2025
Mario Kart World is a 2025 kart racing video game developed by Nintendo EPD and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch 2. The game follows the tradition of previous Mario Kart titles, where players control characters from the Mario series while competing in races against opponents. Mario Kart World features an open-world design and mode, off-roading techniques, an elimination rally mode, and unlockable costumes for playable characters. Races accommodate up to 24 players, double the number allowed in the prior game, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
EPD started working on Mario Kart World for the Nintendo Switch in 2017, just before Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launched. The developers felt they had already refined the core racing mechanics and opted to incorporate open-world elements instead. The name Mario Kart World was selected over Mario Kart 9 to highlight this new direction. Development shifted to the Switch 2 in 2020 due to hardware constraints. The soundtrack, led by a team under Atsuko Asahi, includes more than 200 tracks, with remixed themes from throughout the Mario universe.
Nintendo launched Mario Kart World on June 5, 2025 as a launch title for the Switch 2. It became the top-selling Nintendo Switch 2 game with 15.39 million copies sold. Reviews were largely positive, praising its gameplay and innovations, although some criticism was directed at several design decisions.
