Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate 2025
Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate is a mid-sized add-on for Destiny 2, an first-person shooter video game made by Bungie. This expansion marks the ninth release for the game and launched on July 15, 2025 across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. It also started the eighth year of extended content for Destiny 2, known as the "Year of Prophecy", which included a following expansion named Renegades in December 2025.
After finishing the "Light and Darkness" story arc (2014–2024), players take control of their Guardian to explore Kepler, a planetoid in the Solar System's Oort cloud. The Guardian was invited by the Nine, a group of enigmatic entities made of dark matter who have followed the player through the franchise. These beings occasionally show up via their Emissary or Xûr, the exotic item vendor. In The Edge of Fate, the Guardian joins forces with Warlock Vanguard Ikora Rey, the Drifter, former Emissary Orin, and newcomer Lodi to prevent a singularity on Kepler from collapsing and destroying the whole Solar System. They also must stop Maya Sundaresh, introduced as a villain in Episode: Echoes, from gaining control of the Nine’s power. Originally, this expansion was meant to launch a new long-running narrative called the "Fate" saga; however, those plans were abandoned when Bungie declared they would cease support for Destiny 2 after the Monument of Triumph update in June 2026, although the game remained accessible and playable. In September 2026, Bungie revealed its intentions to return to the series.
The expansion brought significant changes to the gameplay, essentially resetting all players to a base level with new gear systems affecting player stats. Additional content was added throughout the game including fresh missions, Player versus Environment (PvE) zones, Player versus Player (PvP) maps, new player gear, weapons, and a brand-new raid. This release also altered Bungie's approach to delivering content for the year, splitting Year 8 into two large seasons that lasted several months. Each season started with one medium-sized expansion followed by what the developers called a "Major Update" halfway through, instead of previous long expansions with multiple seasons/episodes. Although each expansion still required payment, the story missions and activities included in major updates were free for all users.
The Edge of Fate initiated Season: Reclamation for Year 8, with its major update, Ash & Iron, launching in September 2025. In Ash & Iron, the Guardian ventures to reclaim lands seized by Maya Sundarash and her forces on Earth’s Cosmodrome and Plaguelands. The latter location returns from the original Destiny's final expansion, Rise of Iron (2016). However, unlike in the original game where it was an open patrol area, the Plaguelands can only be entered through missions tied to the major update.
