Civilization VII is a 4X turn-based strategy video game made by Firaxis Games and distributed by 2K. The title launched on February 11, 2025 across platforms including Linux, macOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. On June 5, 2025, it became available for Nintendo Switch 2. Additionally, the game was released on iOS, macOS, tvOS, and visionOS through Apple Arcade on February 5, 2026.

In line with earlier versions of the franchise, players guide a civilization from its early beginnings through multiple in-game eras to rise as a dominant world power. Victory can be achieved through military strength, technological progress, economic dominance, or cultural influence over other human and AI-controlled civilizations. Gameplay includes exploring the map, establishing cities, improving settlements, managing armies for offense and defense, researching technologies and civic advancements, cultivating culture, and negotiating with global leaders. One major innovation in this entry was the introduction of an ages system that splits gameplay into distinct periods, each featuring different civilizations.

The game’s reception leaned toward positive but was more controversial than past titles. Critics commended its visual design, soundtrack, and certain updated mechanics such as revised diplomacy and economic systems. However, the user interface received heavy criticism for lacking clear explanations of core features. Several aspects of gameplay also faced backlash, especially the ages system which divides players into separate eras rather than letting them continue with one civilization throughout a single campaign. Since launch, Firaxis has issued multiple patches to respond to feedback. The most significant update so far, titled "Test of Time," debuted on May 19, 2026. The developers have indicated they plan to resolve one of the game’s biggest complaints by enabling players to maintain a single civilization across an entire campaign.
