Role-playing

Bravely Default is a 2012 role-playing video game developed by Silicon Studio and published by Square Enix for the Nintendo 3DS. It was first released in 2012, followed by an expanded version titled For the Sequel in Japan in 2013. That same expansion was later launched in Europe, Australia, and North America in 2014 under the name Bravely Default, published by Nintendo in those regions. Gameplay features a turn-based battle system combined with a job system that allows players to merge job abilities and customize battle speed and random encounter rates. A high-definition remaster titled Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster was developed by Cattle Call and launched for the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025. Versions for Windows and Xbox Series X/S were made available on March 12, 2026.

The game is set in the world of Luxendarc, which is maintained in equilibrium by four elemental crystals guarded by the Crystal Orthodoxy, a powerful religious group that holds sway across the land. The narrative centers around four main characters: Tiz Arrior, the lone survivor from a village destroyed by the blight affecting the crystals; Agnès Oblige, a vestal of the Wind Crystal who was removed from her duties after the crystals were overtaken by darkness; Ringabel, an amnesiac traveler seeking to uncover the secrets of a mysterious journal he carries; and Edea Lee, a defector from a large army that seeks to capture Agnès. Together, they attempt to recover the four crystals from the encroaching darkness while facing a greater threat.

Development began as an action role-playing sequel to Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, though it maintained its own unique story and gameplay elements. The producer of The 4 Heroes of Light, Tomoya Asano, returned to oversee Bravely Default. The script was written by Naotaka Hayashi, who came from 5pb. due to his involvement in Steins;Gate. Character designs were handled by several artists, including art director Akihiko Yoshida and manga artist Atsushi Ōkubo. The game drew influence from western video games and television series, with individual elements inspired by the Dragon Quest series and Higurashi When They Cry. Music was composed by Revo of Sound Horizon, aiming to capture the emotional tone of classic titles like Dragon Quest and SaGa.

Bravely Default was announced in September 2011 as part of Nintendo's 2012 lineup for the 3DS platform. Prior to its release, multiple demos were created, and the team made adjustments based on player feedback. The For the Sequel version formed the basis for the international release, which was localized without a subtitle. Both in Japan and abroad, Bravely Default achieved strong sales and critical praise. Commonly cited strengths included the blend of traditional mechanics with innovative features, along with its storyline, visuals, and soundtrack. Some criticism focused on repetitive late-game content and certain aspects of social gameplay. The game inspired various media tie-ins and spin-offs. A direct sequel titled Bravely Second: End Layer was released in Japan in 2015 and overseas in 2016 for the Nintendo 3DS, while another sequel set in a new world, Bravely Default II, launched worldwide on the Nintendo Switch in 2021. As of March 2026, the Bravely series has sold over 3 million copies.
