Role-playing

Bravely Default is a role-playing video game that was developed by Silicon Studio and published by Square Enix for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012. It was initially released that same year and then reissued in 2013 as an enhanced version titled For the Sequel in Japan. The expanded edition was later made available in Europe, Australia, and North America in 2014 under the name Bravely Default, published by Nintendo. Gameplay is based on a turn-based system that also uses a job system. Players can combine abilities from different jobs, and there are options to change battle speed and random encounter frequency. A high-definition remaster titled Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster was developed by Cattle Call and launched for the Nintendo Switch in 2 2025. Versions for Windows and Xbox Series X/S were released in 2026.

The setting of Bravely Default is the world of Luxendarc, which is maintained by four elemental crystals guarded by the Crystal Orthodoxy, a powerful religious faction with influence throughout the land. The main story follows four characters: Tiz Arrior, who survived the destruction of his village due to the blight of the crystals; Agnès Oblige, a Wind Crystal vestal expelled from her post after the crystals were overtaken by darkness; Ringabel, a memory-loss wanderer searching for answers in a mysterious journal; and Edea Lee, a soldier from a large army pursuing Agnès. Together, they seek to recover the four crystals from the darkness and face an ominous threat.

Development began as a sequel to Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, though it adopted its own narrative and mechanics while keeping some aspects of the Final Fantasy series. Tomoya Asano, who produced The 4 Heroes of Light, returned to direct Bravely Default. Naotaka Hayashi was brought in as writer, having previously worked on Steins;Gate through 5pb. Character designs were handled by several artists, including Akihiko Yoshida as art director and Atsushi Ōkubo, a manga artist. The game took inspiration from both western video games and TV shows, drawing specific influences from Dragon Quest and Higurashi When They Cry. Its soundtrack was composed by Revo of Sound Horizon, aiming to bring the atmosphere of classic titles such as Dragon Quest and SaGa.

The game’s announcement came in September 2011 as part of Nintendo's 2012 software lineup for the 3DS. Prior to release, developers created several demos and used player feedback to make adjustments. The For the Sequel version formed the foundation for the international release, which was localized without a subtitle. Bravely Default achieved both commercial success and critical praise in Japan and abroad, with particular appreciation for its gameplay blend of traditional and new elements, story, visuals, and music. Some criticism focused on repetitive late-game content and certain aspects of social features. The game inspired multiple spin-offs and adaptations. A direct sequel, Bravely Second: End Layer, was released in 2015 in Japan and 2016 overseas for the Nintendo 3DS. Another sequel set in a new universe, Bravely Default II, launched worldwide on the Nintendo Switch in 2021. As of March 2026, the Bravely series has sold over 3 million copies.
