Holding the Man" is a 1995 memoir written by Australian author, performer, and advocate Timothy Conigrave. The book recounts his 15-year relationship with John Caleo, beginning when they encountered each other in the mid-1970s at Xavier College, a Jesuit Catholic all-boys school located in Melbourne. Their romance continues through the 1990s as both men contracted AIDS. This work, which earned the 1995 Human Rights Award for Non-Fiction, has been transformed into a stage play, a docudrama, and a film released in 2015 starring Ryan Corr, Craig Stott, Anthony La Paglia, Geoffrey Rush, and Guy Pearce.

The phrase "holding the man" originates from Australian Rules Football, referring to a free kick awarded to a defender who is tackled without possessing the ball. Caleo, Conigrave's partner, served as captain of the school’s football team.

Published in February 1995 by Penguin Books in Australia, just several months after Conigrave’s passing, "Holding the Man" has also seen releases in Spain and North America.
