Sisu 2022
Sisu is a 2022 action thriller film written and directed by Jalmari Helander and produced by Petri Jokiranta. The movie features Jorma Tommila, Aksel Hennie, Jack Doolan, Mimosa Willamo, and Onni Tommila in leading roles. Set during the Lapland War, which occurred toward the end of World War II, the story follows a legendary Finnish Army commando who has become a gold prospector. He must defend himself against a Waffen-SS platoon led by a cruel and corrupt officer who intends to rob and kill him.
Originally, Helander planned to work on the science fiction comedy Jerry and Ms. Universe after Big Game, but the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic altered his plans. Instead, he chose to produce Sisu. This international co-production between Finland and the United States was filmed in 2021 near the Nuorgam village in Utsjoki, Lapland. The film’s budget was approximately €6 million ($6.5 million). Helander cited the 1982 film First Blood and the real-life Finnish military sniper Simo Häyhä, who fought the Red Army, as influences for the movie.
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions secured worldwide distribution rights to the film outside of the Nordic countries, while Lionsgate obtained North American rights from Stage 6 Films. Sisu premiered in the Midnight Madness section at the Toronto International Film Festival on 9 September 2022, and had its Finnish debut on 27 January 2023. It was released in the United States on 28 April 2023 and garnered positive reviews. A sequel titled Sisu: Road to Revenge appeared on 21 November 2025, also receiving favorable responses.
