She Said 2022
She Said is a 2022 American drama film directed by Maria Schrader and written by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, based on the 2019 book by reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey. The movie stars Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan as Twohey and Kantor, respectively, and depicts their New York Times investigation into Harvey Weinstein’s pattern of abuse and misconduct. The film also features Patricia Clarkson, Jennifer Ehle, Samantha Morton, and Andre Braugher, who appears in his final role before passing away in 2023. Ashley Judd makes a cameo appearance as herself.
The book was acquired in 2018, with the film announced in 2021 as a collaboration between Annapurna Pictures and Plan B Entertainment. Production occurred in New York under the direction of cinematographer Natasha Braier. Post-production included editing by Hansjörg Weißbrich and music composed by Nicholas Britell.
The film premiered at the 60th New York Film Festival on October 13, 2022, followed by a U.S. release on November 18, 2022 through Universal Pictures. Critics responded favorably, commending both the script and performances by Kazan and Mulligan. It was included among the American Film Institute’s top films of 2022. Nonetheless, it underperformed at the box office, earning $13.9 million against a budget of $32 million. The film received nominations for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Mulligan and Best Adapted Screenplay for Lenkiewicz at the 76th British Academy Film Awards. Mulligan also earned a Golden Globe nomination, while Lenkiewicz was honored with a Critics' Choice Award nomination.
