Prey is a 2022 American science fiction action horror film directed by Dan Trachtenberg from a screenplay written by Patrick Aison, based on a story by Aison and Trachtenberg. It serves as the fifth entry in the Predator franchise and functions as a prequel to the 1987 film Predator, taking place in the Northern Great Plains during 1719. The cast includes Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegro, Michelle Thrush, Stormee Kipp, Julian Black Antelope, and Bennett Taylor. The narrative centers on Naru, a young Comanche woman attempting to establish herself as a hunter. She must defend her community against a deadly humanoid alien that stalks humans for sport.
Work on the movie started during production of The Predator in 2018 when producer John Davis was contacted by Trachtenberg and Aison, who had been working on the idea since 2016. The film’s title was announced in late 2020. Principal photography occurred around Calgary in the summer of 2021, with most scenes filmed in English, although some were shot in Comanche and French. A full Comanche language dub was included for the movie, with the original cast returning for it, marking this as the first feature film to include such a dub.
Prey made its debut at San Diego Comic-Con on July 21, 2022 and was released by 20th Century Studios as a Hulu original film in the United States on August 5. The movie garnered favorable reviews from critics and achieved strong audience numbers. This success led Trachtenberg to direct two more Predator films, Predator: Killer of Killers and Predator: Badlands, which were both released in 2025.
