SatiricalScience fiction horror
A 2022 American science fiction horror film with black comedy tones, M3GAN features an artificially intelligent doll that gains self-awareness and turns aggressive against those who threaten her bond with her human companion. The movie was directed by Gerard Johnstone and written by Akela Cooper, adapting a story by Cooper and James Wan. Starring Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, Amie Donald physically embodies M3GAN while Jenna Davis provides the character's voice. This film marks the beginning of the M3GAN series.
The premiere took place in Los Angeles on December 7, 2022, followed by a theatrical release in the U.S. on January 6, 2023 by Universal Pictures. Worldwide earnings exceeded $181 million despite a production budget of $12 million. Critics responded positively, highlighting its campy mix of horror and humor. A follow-up titled M3GAN 2.0 opened theatrically in June 2025, while a spin-off called Soulm8te appeared directly on streaming in August 2026.
