Carmen 2022
Carmen is a 2022 musical drama film that marks Benjamin Millepied's first time directing a feature film. The screenplay was written by Alexander Dinelaris Jr., Loïc Barrère, and Millepied, based on a story by Millepied and Barrère. The movie features Melissa Barrera, Paul Mescal, Rossy de Palma, and Tracy Curry in leading roles.
Though marketed as Millepied's version of Bizet's famous opera, this film offers a "complete re-imagining" that does not follow the original plot or setting. Only some of the opera’s lyrics are used, sung in French by a choir during one scene between the main characters. The soundtrack includes original music composed by Nicholas Britell, along with songs by Britell, Taura Stinson, Julieta Venegas, and Curry.
The film made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on 11 September 2022. It opened in the United States on 21 April 2023 through Sony Pictures Classics, in France on 14 June 2023 via Pathé Distribution, and in Australia on 13 July by Madman Films.
