Coming-of-age dramaIndependent

Aftersun is a 2022 independent semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Charlotte Wells in her feature directorial debut. The movie stars Paul Mescal, Frankie Corio, and Celia Rowlson-Hall. It draws loosely from Wells' own childhood, depicting an 11-year-old Scottish girl enjoying a vacation with her father at a Turkish resort on the eve of his 31st birthday.

The film premiered internationally at the Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2022, where Wells received a nomination for the Caméra d'Or. In the United States, it opened in theaters on 21 October, followed by a UK release on 18 November. Critics widely praised the direction, screenplay, cinematography, visuals, and performances, particularly those of Corio and Mescal.

Aftersun was nominated for four awards at the 76th BAFTA Awards, with Wells winning Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer. Mescal received a Best Actor nomination at the 95th Academy Awards along with a BAFTA nod in that category. The National Board of Review recognized it as one of the top films of 2022, while Sight and Sound ranked it first on their list of the best films of that year. It has since been considered among the finest works of the 2020s and the 21st century.
