The Damned 2024
A 2024 folk horror film, The Damned marks director Thordur Palsson’s first time behind the camera, with Jamie Hannigan writing the screenplay based on a story by Palsson. The film features Odessa Young as a 19th-century widow who must make a difficult choice when a shipwreck endangers her village’s limited food reserves during a severe winter. Supporting roles are played by Joe Cole, Rory McCann, Lewis Gribben, and Turlough Convery.
This international collaboration between the United Kingdom, Iceland, Ireland, and Belgium was produced by Elation Pictures in partnership with Wild Atlantic Pictures, Netop Films, and Ley Line Entertainment. Principal photography occurred in Iceland during 2023.
The Damned made its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 6, 2024. Prior to release, Vertical Entertainment secured the North American distribution rights and planned a theatrical rollout later in 2024. The film opened in the U.S. on January 3, 2025, earning favorable reviews and collecting $1.3 million at the box office.
