The Crow 2024
Action thrillerFantasySuperhero
A 2024 gothic supernatural superhero film, The Crow marks the fifth entry in the series based on James O'Barr’s 1989 comic book. It is a reboot directed by Rupert Sanders, with a screenplay written by Zach Baylin and William Schneider. The movie is a co-production involving France, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Bill Skarsgård plays Eric / The Crow, a character who returns from death to seek revenge for his own murder and that of his girlfriend, portrayed by FKA Twigs.
Development started in December 2008, when Stephen Norrington expressed intentions to create a "reinvention" of The Crow. The production faced challenges with multiple directors, writers, and actors attached at different stages. Initial directorial names included Norrington, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, F. Javier Gutiérrez, and Corin Hardy. Eric was at one time cast as Bradley Cooper, Luke Evans, Jack Huston, or Jason Momoa. Later, Skarsgård was confirmed for the role of Eric in April 2022, with Sanders attached as director.
Principal photography commenced in July, taking place in Prague and Penzing near Munich. The film made its world premiere in New York City on August 20, 2024. It was released in France on August 21 by Metropolitan Filmexport, and in the United States and United Kingdom on August 23 by Lionsgate and Entertainment Film Distributors respectively. Critics responded negatively to the film, which became a box-office failure, earning $24.1 million globally against its production budget of $50 million.
