Action thriller

The Gray Man is an American action thriller released in 2022, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. The screenplay was co-written by Joe Russo along with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, adapting the 2009 novel by Mark Greaney. Ryan Gosling portrays CIA operative "Sierra Six," who flees after uncovering illegal activities involving his superior. Chris Evans plays the antagonist Lloyd Hansen, a ruthless former CIA agent and mercenary. Supporting cast includes Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Regé-Jean Page, Wagner Moura, Julia Butters, Dhanush in his Hollywood debut, Alfre Woodard, and Billy Bob Thornton. The film was produced by AGBO, the production company owned by the Russo brothers. It marks the beginning of a franchise based on Greaney’s Gray Man novels.

Development began as early as 2011 when James Gray was set to direct with Brad Pitt in mind, and later with Charlize Theron in a gender-flipped role. Those versions never moved forward, and the project sat in development for years before being picked up again in July 2020. At that time, Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans were confirmed as leads. Principal photography occurred from March through July 2021 in Los Angeles, Paris, and Prague. The film had a production budget of $200 million, making it among Netflix’s most expensive productions.

The Gray Man had a limited theatrical release on July 15, 2022, followed by its streaming debut on Netflix on July 22. Critics gave the movie mixed reviews, praising the action scenes and the cast but criticizing the script as clichéd and the pacing too fast. A sequel is already in development, with Ryan Gosling and Dhanush returning. A spin-off series is also planned. The film features music composed by Henry Jackman and runs for 129 minutes. It originates from the United States and was produced in English.
