Oh, Canada 2024
A 2024 American drama film, Oh, Canada was written and directed by Paul Schrader, adapting the 2021 novel Foregone by Russell Banks. Starring Richard Gere, Uma Thurman, Michael Imperioli, Jacob Elordi, Victoria Hill, Penelope Mitchell, and Kristine Froseth, it represents the second partnership between Richard Gere and Paul Schrader, following American Gigolo from 1980. This also marks Schrader’s second novel adaptation by Banks, after Affliction in 1997.
The story centers on a dying filmmaker portrayed by Gere in present-day scenes and Elordi in flashbacks, who reflects during a final interview. He confesses that his image as a progressive figure rests on deception and partial truths, admitting he has repeatedly manipulated and abandoned those closest to him.
Oh, Canada had its world premiere at the main competition of the 77th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2024, competing for the Palme d'Or. It was released in U.S. theaters by Kino Lorber on December 6.
