Gladiator II is a 2024 epic historical film directed and produced by Ridley Scott. It serves as the sequel to the 2000 film Gladiator and features a screenplay written by David Scarpa, who created the story alongside Peter Craig. The production was handled by Scott Free Productions and Red Wagon Entertainment, with distribution managed by Paramount Pictures. Leading roles are played by Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington. Derek Jacobi and Nielsen return to their previous parts, while Mescal takes over the role originally played by Spencer Treat Clark. In this new film, Mescal plays Lucius Verus Aurelius, a Roman prince who is exiled and captured, later becoming a gladiator under Macrinus, a former slave plotting against emperors Caracalla and Geta.

Discussion of a sequel began as early as June 2001, with David Franzoni and John Logan expected to write the script. Over time, updates were shared by Scott, including possible involvement from Russell Crowe and ideas involving Roman mythology and alternate timelines. Development stalled after DreamWorks Pictures was acquired by Paramount in 2006. The film’s announcement occurred in 2018, with Mescal cast as the lead in January 2023 under a script by David Scarpa. Principal photography took place between June 2023 and January 2024, lasting five months due to labor issues in Hollywood during 2023.

Gladiator II made its debut in Sydney, Australia, on October 30, 2024, followed by screenings in the United Kingdom on November 15 and in the United States on November 22. Critics gave it generally favorable reviews, though many felt it did not match the quality of the original. The movie earned a total of worldwide. At the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, it received two nominations: Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, as well as Best Supporting Actor for Washington. It was also nominated for Best Costume Design at the 97th Academy Awards.
