Mystery thrillerPolitical thriller

A 2024 political thriller film, Conclave is directed by Edward Berger and written by Peter Straughan, adapting the 2016 novel by Robert Harris. The movie features Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellitto, and Isabella Rossellini. In the story, Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Fiennes) leads a conclave to select the next pope while uncovering hidden truths and controversies involving key contenders.

The film made its debut at the 51st Telluride Film Festival on 30 August 2024, then opened in U.S. theaters through Focus Features on 25 October 2024 and in the U.K. via Black Bear UK on 29 November 2024. Critics responded favorably, commending acting, direction, script, and visual style. Worldwide earnings reached $128 million against a $20 million budget. Interest surged after Pope Francis passed away in April 2025, followed by the conclave in May that elected Pope Leo XIV—reportedly a fan of the movie.

Conclave was honored as one of the top ten films of 2024 by both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. It earned four awards at the 78th British Academy Film Awards, matching The Brutalist for most wins that night, including Best Film. Additionally, it won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Cast Performance. At the 97th Academy Awards, it garnered eight nominations—Best Picture among them—and took home the Best Adapted Screenplay award.
