Borderlands 2024
Action comedyScience fiction actionScience fiction comedy
A 2024 American science fiction action comedy film, Borderlands is based on the video game series and was directed and co-written by Eli Roth. The movie stars Cate Blanchett as Lillith, an outlaw who joins forces with a group of misfits to locate the missing daughter of the most powerful individual in the universe. Supporting roles are played by Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramirez, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Gina Gershon, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
The project was announced in August 2015, initially featuring Leigh Whannell in the director's chair. By February 2020, Roth had become attached to direct after a screenplay by Craig Mazin. Casting occurred between May 2020 and April 2021, with Blanchett cast first and additional actors added the following year. Principal photography began in April 2021 in Budapest, Hungary, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, concluding in June. Two weeks of reshoots were conducted in early 2023 under Tim Miller’s direction due to Roth’s scheduling conflicts with Thanksgiving. In that same June, Mazin withdrew from the project and was replaced by Joe Crombie.
The film had its premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, California on August 6, 2024, followed by a United States release through Lionsgate on August 9. Critics responded negatively to the film, and it earned $33 million against a production budget ranging from $110 to 120 million, resulting in a box-office failure.
