Venom 2018
Action thrillerScience fiction actionSuperhero
Venom is a 2018 American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Eddie Brock / Venom. It marks the inaugural entry in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU), directed by Ruben Fleischer with a screenplay written by Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg, and Kelly Marcel. Tom Hardy portrays both Eddie Brock and Venom, supported by Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, and Reid Scott. The storyline centers on Eddie, a failing journalist, who gains extraordinary abilities after becoming fused with an alien symbiote named Venom. This species intends to conquer Earth.
After Venom appeared in Spider-Man 3 (2007), Sony Pictures tried to create a spin-off movie about the character but faced delays due to ongoing conflicts within their Spider-Man franchise. In March 2016, development resumed for a new version meant to launch a separate universe including non-Spider-Man Marvel properties that Sony owned rights to. Initially, Sony intended for this Venom film to exist within the same universe as Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), but later decided to keep it separate from Spider-Man. Sony's Columbia Pictures collaborated with Marvel Entertainment on the production. In March 2017, Rosenberg and Pinkner were hired to script, followed by additions of Fleischer and Hardy in May; Marcel then joined to revise the script. Principal photography occurred between October 2017 and January 2018 across Atlanta, New York City, and San Francisco. The movie drew major inspiration from the comic miniseries Venom: Lethal Protector (1993) and the "Planet of the Symbiotes" storyline (1995). Ludwig Göransson composed the score, his second Marvel project after Black Panther (2018).
The film debuted at the Regency Village Theater on October 1, 2018, followed by its nationwide release in the United States on October 5. Although critics gave it mostly unfavorable reviews, praise was extended toward Hardy's performance and his character’s dynamic with Venom. Venom ranked as the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2018, collecting $856.1 million globally and breaking multiple box office records for an October film. Two follow-ups have since been released: Let There Be Carnage (2021) and The Last Dance (2024).
