Biographical dramaCrime dramaIndependent
The Old Man & the Gun is a 2018 American biographical crime film written and directed by David Lowery, focusing on Forrest Tucker, a career criminal and prison escape artist. The screenplay draws loosely from David Grann's 2003 New Yorker article titled "The Old Man and the Gun", later included in Grann's 2010 collection The Devil and Sherlock Holmes. Starring Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, Danny Glover, Tika Sumpter, Tom Waits, and Sissy Spacek, the film features Redford, who at 82 years old, declared he would retire from acting after finishing this project. His final acting appearance was in Avengers: Endgame (2019), filmed prior to The Old Man & the Gun. This became his last movie role before his passing in 2025.
The film premiered globally at the Telluride Film Festival on August 31, 2018, then opened in American theaters through Fox Searchlight Pictures on September 28, 2018. Critics responded favorably, and Redford earned a Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy nomination at the 76th Golden Globe Awards.
