Teen drama

A 2018 American coming-of-age teen drama film, The Hate U Give was co-produced and directed by George Tillman Jr., with screenplay written by Audrey Wells, who passed away just one day prior to the movie’s release. This adaptation of Angie Thomas's 2017 young adult novel follows Amandla Stenberg, a high school student who experiences the aftermath of her friend being killed during a police shooting. Supporting roles are played by Drew Starkey, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Lamar Johnson, KJ Apa, Sabrina Carpenter, Common, and Anthony Mackie.

The film’s development began in March 2016, with casting finishing between August and September 2017. Principal filming commenced in September in Atlanta and concluded in November. Initially, Kian Lawley was cast as Apa's role, but he was removed after offensive material surfaced. Apa then returned to re-shoot those scenes in April 2018.

The Hate U Give made its debut at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2018, and opened in American theaters on October 5 through 20th Century Fox. Critics responded positively, and the movie earned $34.9 million globally against a $23 million budget. Amandla Stenberg's portrayal garnered multiple honors, including an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture and a Critics' Choice Award nomination for Best Young Performer.
