The Front Runner 2018
Biographical dramaPolitical drama
A 2018 American political drama film, The Front Runner follows the story of Senator Gary Hart's journey as the leading Democratic candidate for president in 1988. Directed by Jason Reitman, the movie adapts All the Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid by Matt Bai, a 2014 book, with co-writing credits going to Reitman and Jay Carson. Starring Hugh Jackman, Vera Farmiga, J. K. Simmons, and Alfred Molina, it depicts Hart's rise and downfall after media reports surfaced about his extramarital affair. The film made its debut at the Telluride Film Festival on August 31, 2018 before opening in theaters across the United States on November 6, 2018 through Columbia Pictures. Critics offered mixed feedback, noting that although Jackman delivered a strong performance, other actors were underutilized and the movie failed to thoroughly explore its main themes. Box office returns were poor, grossing only $3.2 million compared to its $25 million production cost.
