Roma 2018
A 2018 historical drama film, Roma is written, produced, and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, who also worked as cinematographer and co-editor. The story unfolds in the years 1970 and 1971, focusing on a live-in housekeeper from an indigenous mixteca background working for a middle-class Mexican family. This semi-autobiographical film draws from Cuarón’s childhood experiences in Mexico City's Colonia Roma area. Starring Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira, the film is a co-production between Mexico and the United States.
Roma made its debut on 30 August 2018 at the 75th Venice International Film Festival, where it earned the Golden Lion. It opened in limited theaters in the United States on 21 November 2018 before becoming available on Netflix in the U.S. and other regions starting on 14 December 2018.
The film garnered multiple honors, including ten nominations at the 91st Academy Awards, such as Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actress (Aparicio), and Best Supporting Actress (de Tavira). It marked the first time a Mexican film won Best Foreign Language Film, and it was the first to secure both Best Cinematography and Best Director for the same individual in one ceremony. Additional wins included two at the 76th Golden Globe Awards, four awards (including Best Picture) at the 24th Critics' Choice Awards, and four awards (including Best Film) at the 72nd British Academy Film Awards. Since its release, it has been recognized as one of the finest films of the 2010s and 21st centuries.
