Historical dramaIndependentRomantic drama
Ophelia is a 2018 historical drama film directed by Claire McCarthy and written by Semi Chellas. The movie adapts the character from William Shakespeare's Hamlet, based on Lisa Klein's 2006 novel. It presents Hamlet's story through Ophelia's viewpoint. Daisy Ridley plays the title role, with Naomi Watts, Clive Owen, George MacKay, Tom Felton, and Devon Terrell appearing in supporting roles. The dialogue uses modern English. The film debuted at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. It opened in limited theaters on June 28, 2019, then released on VOD July 2, 2019 through IFC Films. Reviews were divided, with accusations that Rotten Tomatoes' rating was influenced by paid critics.
