Holmes & Watson is a 2018 mystery comedy film written and directed by Etan Cohen. The movie features Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in the roles of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson respectively, with Rebecca Hall, Rob Brydon, Kelly Macdonald, Steve Coogan and Ralph Fiennes appearing in supporting parts. The story centers on the famous detective pair as they investigate a danger threatening Buckingham Palace.
Originally announced in 2008 with Sacha Baron Cohen portraying Holmes and Ferrell as Watson, the project remained in development for many years before Ferrell and Reilly were confirmed to take their roles in July 2016 and Etan Cohen was named director. Principal photography occurred in London between late 2016 and early 2017. This marked the third time Ferrell and Reilly worked together after Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) and Step Brothers (2008), though this was the first collaboration not directed by Adam McKay, who instead produced the film alongside Ferrell, Jimmy Miller, and Clayton Townsend.
The movie premiered in the United States on December 25, 2018 through Sony Pictures Releasing under its Columbia Pictures imprint. Despite its release, it failed commercially, earning only $41.9 million globally against a $42 million budget. Critics and viewers alike gave the film poor reviews due to its writing, comedic execution, and departure from original source material. It became widely regarded as one of the worst films ever made, with reports of audience members leaving screenings early. The film garnered six nominations at the 39th Golden Raspberry Awards, winning four, including Worst Picture.
